In Australia, in June 2024:
- 13 dogs were killed on tracks (67 have been killed so far in 2024)
- 1,264 dogs were injured on tracks (5,497 injured so far in 2024)
These statistics come directly from racing steward reports, are collated by Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds and are cross checkable on Greyhound Recorder/ Fast Track.
In other news:
- Fernando Bale, now aged 11, has stopped being exploited for his semen (each vial was sold for $7700), but is still available for live matings & has been allowed inside for the first time in his life.
- Unreported greyhound deaths & injuries have been uncovered in Victoria
- In New South Wales, the greyhound racing industry regulator has laid 89 charges against 36 participants, including 36 doping offences & 26 counts of abusive behaviour and ‘arranging’ to have four greyhounds killed, submitting false death certificates and using animal material in lures.
- Anthony Bullock (a former trainer of the year who was suspended in 2023 for animal cruelty but has since been reinstated), since reinstatement has had:
- 9 dogs scratched for parasites including two dogs anemic from parasites
- Dog vomited in their kennel after racing in over 30 degree heat
- A greyhound was found sometime in a two week period dead on his property having been killed at some point by one of Bullock’s companion dogs
- One dog fractured its tibia on track & another broke its back & was euthanised
- South Australia has banned trainer Tony Rasmussen for life after finding him guilty of 11 charges relating to animal mistreatment
- A dog rehomed by a trainer in Western Australia was left tied to a tree after its owner could no longer care for the dog and the trainer refused to take the dog back (this is a failure of the trainer and the racing industry, not the person who adopted the dog)
- Appears Greyhound Racing New South Wales (who still haven’t answered questions about GAP Wyee) have been misrepresenting the numbers of greyhounds rehomed and failed to report a dog’s death
- University of Queensland is killing two greyhounds per week after they ‘fail’ behavioural rehoming assessments
- South Australia has introduced a greyhound breeding rebate to STIMULATE breeding (after an industry vet said this was the best way to prevent the industry being shut down)
